Several years ago, when our three sons were small, the electricity went out during an ice storm and it didn’t come back on! Power was out all over town and the power company didn’t have an estimate on when it would be restored.
So we went played pioneers. My husband built up a big fire in the fireplace and we hauled our sleeping bags out and set them up in the living room to stay warm. We played games, ate snacks, and talked and laughed. No cell phones, no television, not even a radio, just flashlights, and fun.
It started to get late and we were getting ready to fall asleep when all the lights blinked on. Our youngest, who was only about 7 years old, was begging us to stay in the living room.
After almost a year of a pandemic, we could all use a change of pace and some indoor camping.
Build a fire in the fireplace, roast some hot dogs and marshmallows, turn out the lights and tell stories, play games, and spread out your sleeping bags. If you don’t have a fireplace, build a pretend one with construction paper. Or, if you have a tent and space, set it up and crawl in.
Furthermore, if you have an RV or camping trailer, take the party outside. Hook it up and pretend that you’re far from home. No cell phones or televisions allowed.
And you can always pitch your tent in the back yard for a quick (and short) getaway. Grill hot dogs and make s’mores on a fire pit or barbecue grill, play flashlight tag, organize a scavenger hunt in the yard and be sure to take a potty break inside before turning in for the night.
