Houseplants Create a Healthy Home

My great-grandmother could grow anything. When I had my tonsils out, someone gave me a little potted hydrangea, the fragile kind that rarely lives outside a florist’s hothouse. We gave it to my great-grandmother and the next time we saw it, the plant was drooping over their front door at 8 feet tall.

All the women in my family love plants. My Granny always had violets on her windowsill, while my dad’s mom had a huge garden and was always rooting a vine in her kitchen. My mom has divided her plants so often that it’s getting hard to find the floor in her living room.

When we went to visit a friend, the first thing my son said was “You don’t have any plants.” He couldn’t imagine a home without something growing.

Neither can I.

Everyone knows that humans can’t survive without plants. They give us everything from oxygen to apples.

Some house plants not only help you breathe, but they also help you breathe easier, clean toxins out of the air, reduce stress, improve concentration, boost your mood, and can even help you sleep better. Plus, they’re pretty.

Best Plants for the Home:

  • Snake Plant can clean pollutants out of the air and defend against airborne allergies.
  • Rubber Plant helps purify the air to help people with asthma.
  • Aloe Vera gel is good for soothing sunburn, absorbs moisture – good for the bathroom, and releases oxygen even at night.
  • Dracaena Marginata can clean toxins out of the air.
  • Pothos could be the easiest plant to grow and removes toxins from the air.

People with asthma and allergies should avoid flowering plants, like orchids, roses, ferns, ficus, and spider plants.

Over-watering plants can cause fungus and mold to grow on them (yuck!), which is not good for anybody, so avoid that.
