Nail Salon

Finding a Clean Nail Salon

When I was a kid, my mom gave herself manicures. She also did my nails and my grandmother’s nails. I didn’t have a professional manicure until I was in my 30’s.

Hard to believe, now that there’s a nail salon in every strip center and shopping mall in America.

With so many to choose from, how do you pick one that is safe, clean, and does a good job?

Picking a Salon

First, how does the salon look? Does it look clean? Is the trash can overflowing? Is there dust everywhere? If their salon and stations aren’t clean, walk out.

Nail salons have a distinct smell from the polish and products, but if the smell is overwhelming, the salon could have inadequate ventilation. If the smell is overpowering, find a new spot.

Next to every station, you should see the nail tech’s license. The salon should also have its license displayed.

So everything looks nice, you’re in the chair and the nail tech is about to go to work. If they don’t bring out clean, sterilized metal tools and new files, don’t stay. Files, pumice stones, buffers, orange sticks, and anything porous can harbor bacteria. And the metal tools should be sterilized in a disinfectant or an autoclave.

Electric nail files are commonly used in manicures and are safe. You shouldn’t feel any pain or burning during their use.

It’s difficult to really clean the foot baths for pedicures. What are they doing to keep the bowls clean? Do they have liners? Ask how they clean the bowls.

And don’t forget to check the online reviews for the nail salon before you make an appointment. An occasional negative review isn’t a red flag, but several of them would be.

Of course, the best way is to ask a friend or relative who has beautiful, well-kept nails where she gets hers done and who she recommends.
