October is the beginning of the holiday fun with pumpkin spice lattes, decorations, presents and creative holiday dishes with the family. You cannot hide from sicknesses like colds or flu, but you can help to prevent them this season with these nine tips.

Tip # 1 Get Vaccinated

The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. Tip # 2 Avoid Close Contact

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

Tip # 3 Stay Home When You Are Sick

If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. This will help prevent spreading your illness to others and keep you from getting re-infected.

Tip # 4 Cover Your Mouth and Nose

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. This may prevent those around you from getting sick and vise versa.

Tip # 5 Clean Your Hands

Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Scrub your hands and forearms for at least one minute. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Tip # 6 Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose or Mouth

Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

Tip # 7 Practice Other Good Health Habits

Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. This is especially true if you are traveling by air, bus, train or boat.

Tip #8 – Bring on the Rainbow

An important step in creating an immune system of steel is starting with the dinner plate. Bring on fresh foods that are wholesome and jam packed with minerals and vitamins. The critical minerals include selenium, zinc, copper, and iron while the powerhouse vitamins that are ever so important include vitamins A, B6, C, and E. Make sure the dinner plate is full of all the colors of the rainbow of vegetables and fruits to ensure the diet consists of all the essential minerals and vitamins. Increasing the dosage of vitamin C during the colder months will be beneficial with providing extra virus fighting benefits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Tip # 9 – Run, Skip and Jump

Exercising will kick start the immune system and the recommended length of time is 30 to 60 minutes daily. Studies have shown that those who walk for 30 minutes each day had half the number of sore throats and colds compared to the less active group. Exercise is a great stress buster and reduces the harmful benefits of stress on the immune system but keep in mind that a balance of rest and exercise is important for keeping the flu virus at bay. Never underestimate the value of a good solid 8 hours of sleep per night.
